Description

The Sony DSC-S40 is a very compacy 4 megapixel CCD sensor camera releaed in 2005. The real feature of this camera is it's small size. It takes two AA batteries and a memory stick, and it's amazing they both fit in here. It has a tiny extending lens with a lens cover, with a 3x optical zoom range. There are scene modes and a program mode that will let you set the ISO and exposure compensation, but not shutter speed or aperture. The native aspect ratio is 4:3, but it has a 3:2 mode that will utililize unused sensor space for a wider image. It can capture video in 640x480 in two quality levels (Fine and Standard) at 30FPS, as well as 160x112 at 25FPS. It can be had for next to nothing, and it's pocketable size and AA battery compatibility make it a potentially fun camera to pick up. It does take Sony's memory stick, so keep that in mind. If you can live with taking 16 pictures at a time it does feature 32mb of internal storage.

While this is a fun camera to shoot, even with flash it isn't great for low light situations; though at times that can lead to some interesting photos by means of a combination of a slow shutter + flash. Sometimes, I end up having to cover up the flash so I get the exposure that I want, especially in scenes where I want to capture something that is emitting light while keeping everything around it dark; the same technique can be used by covering the flash only halfway to only partially light a scene, a bonus of such a compact design, though at times you might end up covering the flash by accident. My only gripes with it are: relying on the auto-focus when using the viewfinder; it eats through batteries quick (using a 256MB card, you can fill it up once + some extra shots if using flash); mine has an issue where the screen goes white (apparently it was "common" even back then), though that can be remedied by pressing on the bottom right screen bezel next to where it says Sony, or by tapping it lightly where it says CyberShot in front. The tripod screw mount placement is also fairly awful, but I never really used it on a tripod.
